Migration Wizard not migrating more than 16,000 items/folder from Notes to PST

Many of you have used Microsoft’s Exchange Migration Wizard for migrating from Lotus Notes to PST email client. You must have noticed that when you export items from Notes to a PST file by using migration wizard, the migration wizard cannot extract the email items if the size of the mailbox is larger than 1G or the email items is more than 16,000 items in one folder.

Consider an example, you are trying to migrate a mailbox whose size is about 1.6 GB and the number of message items is about 4,000. Now when you migrate the items, you can only obtain 1,500 items. If the size of the mailbox is less than 1GB, the migration can be successful. But in case you have more than 16,128 messages in one folder, the migration cannot be successful completely.

Reason behind this issue

This particular issue occurs due to occurrence of following some limitations while migrating from a Lotus Notes database to Outlook PST file:

• API can only obtain 16,128 items from any given folder.

• 1GB mailbox size limits of the migration items.

Resolution

In order to resolve this issue, you can perform the following points.

• Reduce the size of the mailbox on the Lotus Notes server.

• Use Outlook to dump all the mail items to PST files and merge the files into the user’s mailbox by using the Exmerge tool.

Another easy and break free option could be to use third party tool something like Kernel for Lotus Notes to PST, which is competent in performing migration irrespective of size of the user mailboxes. Try its demo version first and see if it could migrate such large number of mailbox items from Notes to PST.
